It is 1718 and Duncan Melville and his time traveller wife, Erin, are concentrating on building a peaceful existence for themselves and their twin daughters. Difficult to do, when they are beleaguered by enemies.
Everything should be idyllic for Duncan and Erin Melville, now with twin daughters, but it there are so many dangerous men out for revenge, they can't relax for a moment.
I like the way we are lulled into forgetting this is a 'timeslip' story - until something happens to remind us. I found myself wondering what knowledge from the modern world could help Erin deal with the trouble she faces on a daily basis, but she seems content with living in the past, and dreads the prospect of returning to her 'proper' time.
I wasn't familiar with the history of the early Quaker settlers in America, and found the references to racism thought provoking. Like any good historical fiction, the excellent research behind this story has made me want to find out more.
I've been following the Graham saga from the start, and although any one of the books could be read as a 'stand alone', I recommend reading them in order to appreciate the subtle nuances of Anna Belfrage's stories.
