New Stories of the Tudors podcast: Queen Elizabeth I Part One

This podcast is the first of a series of three looking at the life of Queen Elizabeth I, and is an introduction to the key events of Elizabeth’s life.

I’ll be looking at Elizabeth’s challenging childhood, her teenage years, how she ended up imprisoned in the Tower of London, and why she spent most of her reign in fear of assassination.

The next podcast explores the myths and legends which surround the last Tudor queen, and the third will look behind the familiar façade, to see what Elizabeth was really like.

Stories of the Tudors Podcast Fourteen - Katherine Howard

The previous four podcasts on Stories of the Tudors have looked at the lives of each of the first four wives of King Henry VIII.  Now it's the turn of Katherine Howard, Henry's fifth wife, who reigned as queen from the 28th of  July 1540 to the 22nd of  November 1541.

Katherine is often described as naive at best, at worst wanton and reckless. As always, the truth is more complex. In this podcast we’ll explore the known facts and ask how Katherine Howard should be remembered.

I finally found time to listen to Lauren Johnson's fascinating talk about the other side of the Tower of London's history, looking at women who worked, lived and were imprisoned in the tower, from Eleanor of Provence to Lady Jane Grey.

Stories of the Tudors: Anne Boleyn

We think we know a lot about Anne Boleyn, but even the familiar portrait of her has been challenged as a good likeness – and it’s not certain what year she was born in. Her enemies delighted in stories about her being a witch who’d used unfair means to entrance poor King Henry VIII. 

To the supporters of Henry’s first wife, Catherine of Aragon, she was a scheming “goggle-eyed whore” who bewitched Henry VIII away from his true wife and the true religion of Catholicism. To her supporters, she was an intelligent, cultured and graceful lady with great drive and ambition.

Stories of the Tudors Podcast Five: Mary Tudor, Queen of France

I chose to write about Mary Tudor, Queen of France, because I’d researched her birth and early life for Book Three of the Tudor Trilogy, about Mary’s father King Henry VII.

In the trilogy I’d moved forward one generation with each book, so it appealed to me to write a ‘sequel’ which did the same. I’d become intrigued with Mary’s story of how she risked everything to defy her brother when he became King Henry VIII.
